ILIUM is a scientific tool for collecting, standardizing, visualizing, analyzing and exporting archaeological data, both those coming from excavations or collected during architectural studies in elevation (i.e. "vertical stratigraphy" in some Countries).
The software has been designed in order to assist archaeologists and historians to collecting and exchanging data in a standardized format, to speed the recording operations and, to some extent, to guarantees the quality of data.
Finally, the software allows exporting collected data in formatted (HTML) or unformatted (text) files, so that can be used in technical reports, scientific reports, publications, or can be passed to other software for further analysis. The software is addressed to:
- Professional archaeologists (excavations, structural studies / vertical stratigraphy)
- Amateur archaeologists / Archaeological societies (Consult the legislation in your Country.)
- Students.Main features:
- Gathering stratigraphic data according to a well organized schema, derived from archaeological literature and field experience.
- Automatic filling of inverse stratigraphic relationships (is above/is below, cut/is cut, etc...)
- Automatic or semi-automatic filling of specific fields (automatic recognition of color by camera, detect orientation and slope...) while describing layers and structures
- Quality control and coherence correction of data.
- Possibility to use integrated Munsell colors palette while describing a layer.
- Tool for recording graphical documentation (photos and free hand sketches...)
- Filter and search data
- Export data for reports and presentations. Data can be formatted in HTML, suitable for printing, or can be exported in unformatted text, for better subsequent analysis.
A stratigraphic matrix ("Harris' matrix") can be exported to .dot file (to be rendered as image by other softwares)
- Make statistics about volume of building activity according to historical periodization.
- Currently languages available: English, Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Portuguese and Latin.
- Possibility to chose periodization according to the cultural geographic horizon (Europe, North America, Mesoamerica, South America). Please feel free to contact developers for more - or more personalized - periodization.
